What is the TMI VK63A?

The TMI VK63A is a hybrid meca-quartz movement manufactured by Time Module Inc. (a subsidiary of Seiko). The key lies in its dual nature:

  • Quartz oscillator → for basic timekeeping (accuracy ±10 sec/year)
  • Real mechanical train → for the chronograph (with column wheel and physical clutch)

It is not a conventional quartz chronograph. It is a quartz-driven mechanical chronograph.

How the VK63A Works

1. The Quartz Oscillator — Absolute Precision

Unlike an automatic, the VK63A uses a quartz crystal that vibrates at 32.768 Hz as a time reference. An integrated circuit converts these vibrations into electrical impulses that drive a stepper motor, which in turn moves the hour and minute hands.

Result: the time is extremely precise without the need to wind or regulate the movement.

2. The Column Wheel — 100% Mechanical Chronograph

Here's the magic of the VK63A: although the time is quartz-driven, the chronograph is completely mechanical. The column wheel coordinates:

  • Start: Pusher 1 Engages the chronograph train
  • Stop: Pusher 1. Stops the chronograph hands without moving them
  • Instant Reset: Pusher 3. The heart cams instantly return the hands to zero

3. Instant Reset — The Great Advantage

The VK63A allows for resetting while the chronograph is running (simplified flyback). The hands return to zero and immediately resume. This is a premium feature that only appears in high-end Swiss watches.

4. The Pushers — Precise Control

  • Pusher 1. Top (2h): Start / Stop
  • Pusher 3. Bottom (4h): Instant Reset
  • Crown 2. (3h): Time and Date Adjustment

NOTE: The crowns are screw-down; unscrew both pushers, 1 and 3, counter-clockwise to operate (2 is only for setting the time). Once finished, screw all crowns back in for watch water resistance.


5. The Tachymeter Bezel

With the 1/5 second subdial of the VK63A, tachymetric readings are more precise than with most automatic chronographs.
