PANTER NH35A Watches: How to set the time and complete maintenance

Relojes PANTER NH35A: Cómo poner en hora y mantenimiento completo

The Seiko NH35A Movement: The Heart of Your PANTER

The Seiko NH35A is one of the most reliable and valued automatic movements in the world of watchmaking. With 24 jewels, a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour (6 Hz), and a power reserve of approximately 41 hours, this caliber is the perfect base for PANTER handcrafted watches. Its robustness and precision make it the ideal companion for daily use.

How to Set Your PANTER NH35A Watch

The NH35A has a crown with three positions. It is essential to know them to operate the watch correctly without damaging the movement.

Crown Positions

  1. Position 0 – Crown pushed in (normal position): The watch operates normally. The rotor automatically winds the mainspring with the movement of your wrist. Always keep the crown in this position during use.
  2. Position 1 – Crown slightly pulled out (1 click): Allows you to adjust the date. Turn the crown forwards or backward until the correct date appears. Important: never adjust the date between 9:00 PM and 1:00 AM (local time), as the date change mechanism is active during that period and you could damage the gears.
  3. Position 2 – Crown fully pulled out (2 clicks): Allows you to adjust the hour and minute hands. The second hand stops (hacking function), which allows you to synchronize the watch precisely. Turn the crown until the hands show the correct time and push the crown back in when finished.

Steps to Set the Time

  1. Pull the crown out to position 2 (2 clicks). The second hand will stop.
  2. Turn the hands until you are close to the correct time. If you also need to change the date, first pass 12:00 PM to advance the day.
  3. Synchronize with a reliable time source (your phone, radio, etc.) and push the crown in at the exact moment.
  4. If you need to adjust the date, pull the crown out only 1 click and turn it. Remember not to do so in the risk zone (9:00 PM–1:00 AM).
  5. Always push the crown completely in when finished.

Manual Winding of the Mainspring

If the watch has stopped due to lack of use, you can wind it manually by turning the crown in position 0 (pushed in) about 20–30 turns clockwise. This will provide enough power reserve to start the movement. From there, normal use on the wrist will maintain the charge automatically.

Expected Accuracy of the NH35A

The Seiko NH35A movement has a factory accuracy of +45/-35 seconds per day, although in practice most units perform between ±10–15 seconds/day. If your watch consistently exceeds ±20 seconds/day, it may need regulation.

Factors affecting accuracy:

  • Resting position: The position in which you leave the watch when sleeping influences its performance. Crown up or crown down are the most stable positions.
  • Temperature: Abrupt temperature changes affect lubrication and accuracy.
  • Magnetic fields: Avoid bringing the watch near magnets, speakers, or powerful electronic devices.
  • Charge level: A low-wound mainspring can reduce accuracy.

Maintenance of Your PANTER NH35A Watch

Daily Care

  • Cleaning: Clean the case with a soft, slightly damp microfiber cloth. For the steel bracelet, use a soft brush with soapy water (crown tightly closed).
  • Water resistance: Check the water resistance level of your specific model. Always avoid hot water, steam, and chemicals (colognes, sunscreens) in direct contact with the watch.
  • Leather straps: Avoid getting them wet. Replace them every 12–18 months depending on use and accumulated sweat.
  • Storage: Store your PANTER in its case or watch box, away from magnetic fields and in a dry, cool place.

Recommended Periodic Maintenance

  • Gasket inspection (every 2–3 years): The rubber or silicone gaskets that ensure water resistance degrade over time and exposure to heat. A specialized watchmaker should check and replace them to maintain water resistance.
  • Full movement service (every 4–6 years): Includes disassembly, ultrasonic cleaning of parts, replacement of lubricants, and regulation of accuracy. This is the most important service to prolong the life of the NH35A.
  • Regulation (if necessary): If accuracy deteriorates significantly, a watchmaker can regulate the balance spring to improve performance.
  • Case polishing (optional): If you prefer to maintain the original finish, avoid frequent polishing. On PANTER models with satin or brushed finishes, polishing can alter the handcrafted aesthetic.

Signs Your NH35A Needs Service

  • The watch consistently loses or gains more than ±20 seconds/day
  • The second hand moves irregularly or stops without reason
  • The crown shows resistance, play, or does not engage in its positions
  • Visible condensation or moisture under the crystal
  • The automatic rotor makes unusual or grinding noises
  • The watch stops even when wound
