PANTER GMT Watches: How they work, how to set the second time zone, and maintenance

Relojes GMT PANTER: Cómo funcionan, cómo poner en hora la segunda zona horaria y mantenimiento

What is a GMT watch?

A GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) watch is a horological complication that allows the wearer to simultaneously read two or more time zones. The name comes from the Greenwich meridian, the universal reference for time. In PANTER GMT watches, this function is integrated with the artisanal precision of our modifications based on Seiko, offering an elegant and functional tool for the modern traveler.

The main feature is an additional hand—usually in a different color—that completes a full rotation of the dial every 24 hours, allowing a second time zone to be read on a 24-hour graduated bezel.

How does the GMT mechanism work?

The GMT movement incorporates an additional gear train that moves the GMT hand independently of the local hour and minute hands. There are two main types:

  • True GMT / Caller GMT: The local hour hand can be adjusted independently, hour by hour, without affecting the minutes or the GMT hand. Ideal for time zone changes during travel.
  • Traveler GMT: The GMT hand and the local hour hand move together. To change the local time, you adjust the GMT hand and then reposition the local time.

PANTER GMT models use Seiko NH34 movements, which offer the independent local time adjustment function, making daily use easier.

How to set the second time zone

Follow these steps to correctly set your PANTER GMT watch:

  1. Identify the crown: The crown of your PANTER GMT has several positions. Make sure never to force it.
  2. Position 1 (crown slightly pulled out): In this position, you can adjust the GMT hand (second time zone) and the date. Turn the crown until the GMT hand points to the correct time of your reference zone (e.g., your home city's time) on the 24-hour bezel.
  3. Position 2 (crown fully pulled out): Here you adjust the local time (hour and minute hands). Turn until the hands show the correct time for your current location.
  4. Push the crown back in: Always push the crown completely back in to ensure water resistance and protect the movement.
  5. Check the bezel: The 24-hour bezel allows you to read the second time zone directly where the GMT hand points. AM corresponds to hours 0–12 and PM to hours 12–24.

PANTER Tip: Set the GMT hand to your home city's time. This way, when you travel, you only need to adjust the local time and you'll always know what time it is back home.

Reading the 24-hour bezel

The 24-hour graduated bezel is key to reading the second time zone. The upper half (usually with a lighter background or marked with a sun ☀️) represents daytime hours (6:00–18:00), while the lower half (darker or with a moon 🌙) represents nighttime hours (18:00–6:00). This allows you to see at a glance whether it is day or night in your second time zone.

Maintenance of your PANTER GMT watch

An artisanal precision watch like the PANTER GMT requires specific care to maintain its performance and aesthetics over time.

Daily maintenance

  • Exterior cleaning: Clean the case and strap with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals, colognes, or creams directly on the watch.
  • Water resistance: Although our GMT models are water-resistant, avoid exposing them to hot water (showers, jacuzzis) as steam can compromise the gaskets.
  • Storage: Store your PANTER in its original case or a watch box away from strong magnetic fields (speakers, magnets, electronic devices).

Periodic maintenance

  • Gasket inspection (every 2–3 years): The silicone gaskets that ensure water resistance degrade over time. We recommend inspecting and replacing them at a specialized workshop.
  • Movement lubrication (every 3–5 years): Basic Seiko movements require periodic lubrication to maintain accuracy and prevent gear wear. This service should be performed by a certified watchmaker.
  • Accuracy check: If you notice your watch gaining or losing more than ±15 seconds per day, it may need regulation. Seiko NH34 movements have a factory accuracy of ±10 sec/day.
  • Strap and bracelet: Leather straps should be replaced every 1–2 years depending on use. Steel bracelets can be cleaned with a soft brush and soapy water (with the crown tightly closed).

Signs that your watch needs service

  • Time loss or gain exceeding ±20 sec/day
  • The crown shows resistance or does not fit correctly
  • Visible condensation under the crystal
  • The GMT hand does not advance smoothly
  • The automatic rotor makes unusual noises
