If you're a diver or practice water sports, you know that wearing your watch over a wetsuit is a challenge. The Oyster and Jubilee bracelets are two of the most iconic designs in the watch world, and both can be equipped with a diver's extension that allows you to easily extend their length. In this article, we'll explain step-by-step how to adjust them correctly.
What is a diver's extension?
The diver's extension (also called a wetsuit extension) is a mechanism integrated into the clasp of the bracelet that allows the strap length to be extended by an additional 10 to 20 mm, sufficient to fit over the sleeve of a 3 to 7 mm wetsuit.
It's activated with a simple gesture: by pressing a button or sliding a lever on the clasp, no tools needed.
Oyster bracelet: adjustment with diver's extension
The Oyster bracelet is characterized by its flat, robust links, with a butterfly or deployant clasp. It's the most common on dive and sports watches.
Step 1 – Locate the deployant clasp
The Oyster clasp is usually a double-push-button security clasp. Look for it on the underside of your wrist.
Step 2 – Open the main clasp
Simultaneously press the two side buttons of the clasp to open it. The bracelet will unfold into two halves.
Step 3 – Activate the diver's extension
Inside the clasp, you'll see a small lever or additional button marked with a wave icon or simply a slot. Slide or press this lever outwards: the clasp will automatically extend between 10 and 20 mm.

Step 4 – Place the watch over the wetsuit
With the extension activated, pass the bracelet over the sleeve of the wetsuit and close the main clasp. It should be firm but comfortable, without pinching the wetsuit.
Step 5 – Fine-tune with micro-adjustments
Many Oyster clasps include 3 micro-adjustment positions (approximately 2 mm each). If the extension is too loose, use these positions to tighten it slightly.
PANTER Tip: Practice opening and closing the extension dry before your dive. With neoprene gloves, the movement is clumsier, so it's good to have it automated.
Jubilee bracelet: adjustment with diver's extension
The Jubilee is more elegant and flexible thanks to its five-piece links. Although less common on dive watches, some Seiko Mod models incorporate it with a security clasp and extension.
Step 1 – Identify the security clasp
The Jubilee clasp is usually a butterfly clasp with a double-click safety catch. It's thinner than the Oyster, so handle with care.
Step 2 – Unlock the safety catch
Press the two side tabs of the clasp inwards and open it. You'll see the internal mechanism with the micro-adjustment holes.
Step 3 – Activate the extension
Inside the clasp, you'll find a folding lever (sometimes gold or silver colored). Pull it outwards: this releases an additional section of the clasp that expands the bracelet.

Step 4 – Place and close
Position the watch over the wetsuit and close the mechanism. Make sure the double safety click engages correctly: you should hear or feel two clicks when closing.
Step 5 – Verify stability
Gently pull the watch upwards to check that the clasp does not open. The Jubilee is lighter and may move more over the wetsuit, so make sure it is well-centered on the wrist.
PANTER Tip: If your Jubilee doesn't have an integrated diver's extension, you can add a steel extension link between the links. Consult us to find the compatible size for your mod.
In action: the extender during diving
Once in the water, the diver's extension keeps the watch secure on the wetsuit without compressing circulation. When you exit the water, simply retract the extension to return to the normal fit on your bare wrist.

Quick comparison: Oyster vs Jubilee with extender

Extender maintenance
After each dive in salt water, rinse the clasp with fresh water and dry it thoroughly. The extension mechanism has small springs that can rust if not cared for. Once a month, apply a drop of watch oil to the extension joint to keep it fluid.
